preface
W.A. Mozart composed the famous sinfonia concertante KV 364 for solo violin and solo viola with orchestral accompaniment (two oboes, two french horns, violin I and II, viola I and II, cello and double bass). Only fragments of the original score have survived and were not published until the second half of the 19th century. The work itself was first published by Anton Andrč (Offenburg, 1801/02), who also acquired Mozart's estate from his widow.
The first arrangement for piano trio (Zulehner, Mainz) appeared as early as 1802. The "Wiener Chemische Druckerei" anonymously published a version for string sextet in 1808 as "Grande Sestetto Concertante" for two violins, two violas and two cellos (or double bass for second cello). The former choirboy Sigmund Anton Steiner (1773-1838) had been the owner of this printing company since 1803. In 1812 he published the first part of Mozart's Requiem. It has not, however, been ascertained whether he was also involved in the arrangement of the sinfonia concertante.
As the 1808 "Grande Sestetto Concertante" was no longer generally available in the 20th century, in 1981 Gunther Schuller published with Margun Music Inc. (Newton Centre, Massachusetts, USA) a new version of this sextet with some small and, from a technical point of view, mostly insignificant changes.
Our Graz Chamber Music Circle, who had a copy of the sextet in the 1981 version, took a unanimously negative view of this arrangement. Both of the solo parts are more or less divided equally amongst all six voices with the result that Mozart's well-known and much loved composition is robbed of its original character. We discussed, therefore, the possibility of leaving both solo voices as in the original and only integrating the brass and wind voices (horns and oboes) into a string sextet. It was our friend and cellist, Prof. Ernst Rosenberger, Chorus Director and Kapellmeister at the Graz Opera, who translated in 1988 these thoughts into action and we are particularly grateful for the great sensitivity and considerable technical knowledge with which he did so. The "new" arrangement of Mozart's work which we now have affects, therefore, only the orchestral part which, as a wind- and brass-free string sextet, now accompanies the two solo instruments, the violin and viola.
Ernst Rosenberger has thus opened up for us amateur string players and for all lovers of chamber music the delightful possibility of playing this jewel of Mozart's, with its richness of sound, in an authentic style as music for the home, without brass or woodwind. On behalf of all those who enjoy making music at home we would at this point like to express our warmest thanks to him for this.
This arrangement of the sinfonia concertante for solo violin and solo viola has since 1989 been performed many times in Graz, Vienna and Bad Leonfelden (Upper Austria). Thanks to the personal commitment of our music lover Dr. Wolfgang Pflegerl (G.P. in Mallnitz, Carinthia), it enjoyed its public premiere on ninth February 1995 in the Wiener Musikverein's "Brahmssaal" to great acclaim from both the public and the press. A string sextet from the Ensemble Wien accompanied the two Philharmonic soloists Paul Guggenberger (solo violin) and Peter Goetzel (solo viola).
For the successful support and assistance in the painstaking publication of this arrangement my thanks go to o.Prof.Dr. Gernot Gruber (Vienna), em.o.Univ.Prof. Christos Polyzoides (Graz), Jorgos Papoutsis (Vienna), Bernhard Zach (Graz), Hans Silbernagel (Graz) and last but not least the music publisher Mersich & Kiess (Vienna).
