preface
The Concert in A maj, Hob VIIa:3, ranks among Joseph Haydn's few authentic violin concertos. It was written supposedly between 1765 and 1770; in any case before 1771, when it was first listed by the publisher, Breitkopf, in his catalogue. Regrettably there is no autograph. The source upon which the present edition is based contains the "principal" and "ripieno" parts in the hand of an unknown copyist. It was discovered in the music library of the convent of Melk (Lower Austria) - hence the epithet "Melk Concert".
The origin of the manuscript is unknown. It had probably been used during Haydn's lifetime already; by 1826, it had been acquired by the convent. In the mid-1900's a Venetian copy of the score was found. Recently, isolated parts (mostly the solo part) have been surfacing in various places - a state of affairs suggesting a wider dissemination of the concert than originally supposed.
Besides the solo and the string parts, the cardinal source from Melk contains two French horn parts of doubtful authenticity. There are no horns in the Venetian manuscript; oboes are nowhere to be found in either source. In the 1952 edition issued by the "Haydn-Mozart-Press", oboes were supplemented - an attempt at "completion" deliberately eschewed by the present edition. It is now assumed that the concerto should be accompanied only by strings. For further reference, please note the 1968 edition by the "Joseph Haydn Institute" in Cologne.
The editor would like to express his special thanks to the convent of Melk for providing him with the parts it keeps in its custody.
Comments on the edition and its musical use:
This score is not primarily intended to fulfill a practical purpose. The editor's foremost concern was to stay faithful to the Melk manuscript. Suggestions for articulation were added in a cautious manner. The relatively frequent occurence of these suggestions, however, is a result of the historic material's substantial inaccuracy. This may partly be due to the performing habits of Haydn's day, partly to the copyist's slovenliness.
Some interventions on the editor's part were inevitable in order to facilitate a homogenous reproduction of the concert. Especially the soloist, however, is faced with a number of interpretational choices. These should be based on some knowledge of period performance as well as on a sound musical taste. In a departure from today's editing habits, suggestions for performance have been marked in both the score and in the individual parts.
Obvious writing errors and the erratic setting of the eighth notes strokes in the manuscript have been corrected without further reference. This edition is dedicated to my esteemed friend, Dr Walter Reicher, artistic director of the "Burgenland Haydn Festival" in Eisenstadt.
Anton Gabmayer, Conductor Anton Gabmayer is the author of these articles. He is the promotor of the present edition if this work.
