This arrangement developed during the preparations for the CD production "Strauss in Vienna" (Nimbus Records NI 5542) with the "Quintett Wien". The work based on the orchestral score of the waltz. The five-part introduction of the waltz can be realized very successfully with a wind quintet, whereas the further arrangement has to dispense with most of the doublthirds characteristic of this waltz, whereby the sound becames "thinner".
Nevertheless the great flexibility of the classical woodwind quintet allows for a tonally more colorful interpretation with replaces voluminous orchestral sound one is used to. A special reference can be made to the role of the bassoon which has a bass and accompaniment function in the quintet movement, although its mode of playing is intended to imitate the constantly swinging sound of a double-bass. The accompaning notes on the second and third beat are always to be kept short.
I would like to thank my colleagues for their helpful tips I received during the preparation work and the music publishers Mersich & Kiess for their friendly cooperation.
