In 1786 the Spaniard V.M. y Soler composed the "Cosa rara" (Libretto: Lorenzo da Ponte) which became one of the most well known operas in Europa of the late 18th century after its first performance in Vienna. Also W.A. Mozart estimated it and mentioned it musically in his "Don Giovanni" in the dinner scene as "Harmoniemusik" (music arrangements for woodwind ensembles).
Johann N. Wendt (1745 - 1801), oboist of the former Kaiserliche Hofmusikkapelle, (Royal Court Orchestra in Vienna), arranged about 70 other operas besides of the "Cosa rara" for wind ensembles. Two contemporary copies of it were used as the prototype for the current edition: one of the archiv of Prince Esterházy's Private Foundation (Eisenstadt, Austria) and one of the Saxon City Archives in Dresden (Germany). The final correction of this work is based on the modern score by Henle publishing house in Munich. Comments by the publisher are set aside with brackets or dotted slurs. A complete critic can be found in the form of a masters thesis at the University of Music and Fine Art in Vienna.
This arrangement had been recorded by the ensemble "Collegium Viennense" for "pepperland records" (Nr. 99012).
