The Concerto in B flat major, finished in January 1791, is the last piano concerto authored by Mozart. He wrote it for himself and shortly afterward first performed it at an "academy", a private concert given by the clarinettist, Joseph Bähr (or Beer). Recognition of the genuine masterpiece's inherent intellectual and emotional depths did not come until long after Mozart's death.
This arrangement by Wolgang Kiess challenges trained flutists in both a musical and a technical sense. Kiess was very careful to balance the need to simplify the work with the need to remain true to the original piece while mainting both parts. The phrasing follows the original piece; articulations were only added to the legato runs of the piano part and are meant only as suggestions or hints to the musician.
