In April 1869 Johannes Brahms agreed to the publisher Simrock's wish to orchestrate the "Hungarian Dances" which he had arranged for four hand piano one year before. The work dragged on. Four years later the composer had only finished the orchestration of dances No. 1, 3 and 10. Although Brahms intended to orchestrate more dances, these three remain the only works which the composer arranged for orchestra himself. This orchestration was the basis for the present wind quintet arrangement.
Any obvios compositional or printing errors have been corrected. Most articulation and dynamics are not taken from the original but have been revised for woodwind quintet. Additionally, some octave transpositions were necessary because of the different ranges of the various wind instruments. I would like to thank the music publishing house Mersich & Kiess for its support and friendly cooperation.
