Only a few original compositions for woodwind quintet exist from the Romantic musical period. This fact, coupled with the 200th anniversary of Franz Schubert's birth in 1997, were reasons and challenge enough to arrange the trio for piano, violin and violoncello op. 148 in Eb-major "Notturno" D 897 for woodwind quintet. The opus was first published posthumously in 1845 as "Adagio " by the music publishing house "Diabelli". For this edition the original score was available. The title "Adagio" is Schubert's own, but next to it is written in a different hand "Notturno", which became "Nocturne" in Diabelli's edition. This edition was the basis for the present arrangement.
Any obvious compositional or printing errors have been corrected. Most articulation and dynamics are not taken from the original but have been revised for a woodwind quintet. Additionally, some octave transpositions were necessary because of the different ranges of the various wind instruments.
