Only a few original compositions for woodwind quintet exist from the Romantic musical period. This fact, coupled with the 200th anniversary of Franz Schubert's birth in 1997, were reasons and challenge enough to arrange the trio for piano, violin and violoncello op. 99 in Bb-major D 898 for woodwind quintet.
Since the autograph is missing, the first printing of this opus was the basis for this arrangement, which was published posthumously in 1836 by the music publishing house "Diabelli" as the "Grand Trio in B ".
Any obvious compositional or printing errors have been corrected. Most articulation and dynamics are not taken from the original but have been revised for a woodwind quintet. Additionally, some octave transpositions were necessary because of the different ranges of the various wind instruments.
